Per Nørgård

Compositeur danois né le 13 juillet 1932 à Gentofte, près de Copenhague

Per Nørgård est sans aucun doute le personnage central de la musique danoise d'aujourd'hui. Il occupe cette position non seulement à cause de l'impressionnante puissance de sa musique mais aussi par l'enseignement qu'il dispense à toute une génération de jeunes compositeurs de son pays. Ses nombreux écrits traitent de sujets aussi variés que l'esthétique, la philosophie de la musique, musique et politique et ont un impact considérable dans le débat culturel de notre temps.

Nørgård étudie d'abord à l'Académie Royale du Danemark, notamment avec Vagn Holmboe et ensuite, de 1956 à 1957, avec Nadia Boulanger. Depuis le début des années soixante, l'oeuvre de Nørgård est étroitement liée à son exploration des possibilités compositionnelles de la «série infinie». Ses recherches l'amènent à développer des concepts semblables d'infini dans le domaine du rythme et de l'harmonie - «La musique hiérarchique». Au coeur même de cette recherche se trouve la Symphonie n°3 (1972-75) qui présente cette technique sous une forme plus claire.

Les préoccupations de Nørgård ont évolué récemment ; sa fascination pour l'artiste schizophrénique Adolf Wölfli (1864-1930) notamment a inspiré plusieurs de ses oeuvres dans lesquelles les contrastes et les conflits produisent le matériau thématique. Parmi celles-ci se trouvent la Symphonie n°4 (1981) et un opéra sur la vie deWölfli The Divine Circus (1982).

Un signe du respect dont jouit le compositeur est sans aucun doute la commande qui lui est faite de sa Cinquième Symphonie, créée dans un programme qui comprend également la Cinquième Symphonie de Sibelius et celle de Nielsen.
